Teatrino Malaspina - Mulazzo (MS)

COLLAPSE

L’obiettivo dell’installazione è dichiaratamente militante.

COLLAPSE

The visionary mise-en-scène, conceived by Elisabetta Susani for the “empty womb” of the historic Teatrino Malaspina in Mulazzo, leads us into an uncharted post-apocalyptic landscape, the landfall of an eccentric and uncommon artistic journey.

The installation springs from a participant observation project ever in gestation, generated by “natural works wrought from living nature itself, which nevertheless deliberately eschew the naturalistic dimension”.

Yet it is a news event that strikes the spark.
On 2 August 2022, an arson fire devastates the gentle slopes that embrace the Land of Melissae, where, exactly three years before, the artist had sought silence, withdrawing from the "academic and media carousel".

Thanks to the intervention of the Civil Protection Department and a few willing hands, the flames halted one breath away from the “artistic apiary” and the tiny haven of La Dea Ape, the non-profit organisation she had founded together with a small band of friends.
The bee community is decimated, weakened, but will resist for a long time before abandoning the city.

The artist is a reporter: astonished, she wanders among the ‘silent vestiges,’ which she limns with lucidity and enchantment typical of magical realism.

Her transfiguration of the Apollonian forms of this “superorganism of extraordinary natural intelligence” probes the “reversal of the sublime into the revelation of the minuscule”.

The symbolic centrepiece of the exhibition, looming over us, is a Megalithic Disintegration, not innocent of the Fall of the Giants, staged by Giulio Romano in the Hall of the Giants of Palazzo Te in Mantua.

The aim of the installation is openly militant.

It explicitly alludes to 'the ruinous crumbling of contemporary society, the shattering of its illusory scaffolding, the recoil of predatory acts and extractive fury, which we have perpetrated indiscriminately against the planet that harbours us'.

But if collapse is to be, inevitably we must learn to inhabit collapse.

Though pierced by ecological grief, the artist rejects barren catastrophisms.

Resonances of her thought are rather to be found in the evolving concepts of collapsology.
